Q: Why won't the CD install on Windows Vista?
A: Load and browse the CD, right-click on the Windows Installer and select 'Run as Administrator'. Double-click to install.

Q: Does the Pevsner CD/Index include the whole text of the books?
A: The text is summarized and all keywords (names, dates, parts of building etc) included; page references to the books are added. If the text of the book is no more than a line or two, describing a church furnishing or a small house, it will essentially be there; if it consists of a 40-page description of a cathedral, it will be condensed into several hundred records whose Notes fields include its key points. If the whole text had been captured, the CD would in effect have replaced the books, apart from their introductions and illustrations, and the publisher of the books - Penguin, latterly Yale University Press - was for obvious reasons unwilling to allow this.

Q: Why aren’t buyers of the first edition getting a discount?
A: Although some consideration was given to this idea, the unexpected costs involved in the research and development of the second edition regrettably made it impractical. Users are getting access to a database over half as big again as the first edition, and for little increase in costs (when the first edition was published by Oxford University Press in 1995, it retailed at £300).

Q: When will new editions of the books be added to the index?
A: This will depend on sales being in sufficient volume to fund the compiler’s time spent adding new editions to the database.
